Ruby Tuesday ~ Thurber, Texas and Other Places

Have you ever been to Thurber, Texas?  Or passed it while driving west on Interstate 20?  There’s not much there really.  It’s a ghost town with a reported population of five.   On the north side of the freeway you’ll find the Thurber Fire Station, some empty brick buildings, a smoke stack memorial for the old coal mines  and The Smokestack Restaurant which serves a really good chicken fried steak–a Texas favorite.

For Ruby Tuesday, I thought I’d share this photo of the Thurber Fire Station.

And this one of the red brick smokestack a memorial of the coal mines and miners.

And the red brick buildings…

Then after a Sunday afternoon lunch of that delicious chicken fried steak and homemade mashed potatoes, we drove further west to walk about Eastland, Texas where I found this window display at a little shop named “Somewhere in Time.”  I  shared a black and white version of this image a few weeks ago for Monochrome Weekly but I also like the color version and his red bow tie and Ruby Red lips.

A bit farther down the sidewalk was this “Antiques and Uniques” Shop with a Ruby Red  sign painted on the building…

And then across the square I spied this Majestic Movie Theater sign…red, of course.

I have more photos to share of Eastland and other towns but that’ll be in another post on another day.  So for now, I hope you’ve had a wonderful Ruby Tuesday and if you want to see more Ruby Red photos by other contributors, be sure to click on the badge in the sidebar.

Great pictures Sandy! Did you know that Eastland is where our Mary lives? Thurber is a neat place even if there isn't much there. The Smokehouse is a good place to eat so is the New York Hill Steak house across the interestate.

One of my aunts was born in Thurber. Joe and I have eaten there on our way to Ablilene. It was quite a booming town during the early years of the oil boom According to some old timers we knew.

Thanks for the great tour. Love old towns. I bet Ed has been through there on I-20. Probably at night, so he doesn't know what he is missing, as he'd love to photograph it. :) :)

Yes a neat place to see. I wonder if anyone knows what the brick building behind the smoke stack is? I'd love to know…it's very obscure for all the over growth between it and the smoke stack.

@Rex,

Hmmm…until you mentioned it, I didn't notice the brick building behind the smoke stack. I wonder what it was too.

Was Thurber ever enclosed with walls, like a fort? I am tracking a young relative that "rode the rails" and found himself in an enclosed mining town. He found himself working there until a "guard" helped him out of the enclosure at night, to return north to his family again.

@Dee,
Interesting. I don't know if Thurber was ever enclosed or not. The mine might have been. There is a restaurant there called The Smokestack and they have lots of photos on the wall from way back. The town didn't appear to be enclosed by walls but like I said I'm not sure about the actual mine. It might have been. Next time we eat there which could be months I'll try to remember to look!
